For some reason, David Bowie’s “Oh! You Pretty Things”, from his 1972 release “Hunky Dory”, popped into my head and I started singing it to Wendy today. She listened to the words and asked me to play the song for her. It was then that it dawned on me, Bowie was talking about we Starseeds. From the time I first heard this around 1973-74, it’s always been one of my favorite Bowie songs. If not Starseeds/Indigos, what do you think Bowie is talking about? Lyrics to follow.
“Oh! You Pretty Things”
Lyric by David Bowie
Wake up you sleepy head
Put on some clothes, shake up your bed
Put another log on the fire for me
I’ve made some breakfast and coffee
Look out my window and what do I see
A crack in the sky and a hand reaching down to me
All the nightmares came today
And it looks as though they’re here to stay
What are we coming to
No room for me, no fun for you
I think about a world to come
Where the books were found by the Golden ones
Written in pain, written in awe
By a puzzled man who questioned
What we were here for
All the strangers came today
And it looks as though they’re here to stay
Oh You Pretty Things
Don’t you know you’re driving your
Mamas and Papas insane
Oh You Pretty Things
Don’t you know you’re driving your
Mamas and Papas insane
Let me make it plain
You gotta make way for the Homo Superior
Look at your children
See their faces in golden rays
Don’t kid yourself they belong to you
They’re the start of a coming race
The earth is a bitch
We’ve finished our news
Homo Sapiens have outgrown their use
All the strangers came today
And it looks as though they’re here to stay
Oh You Pretty Things
Don’t you know you’re driving your
Mamas and Papas insane
Oh You Pretty Things
Don’t you know you’re driving your
Mamas and Papas insane
Let me make it plain
You gotta make way for the Homo Superior
Notice how Bowie is giving us a hint here? He says it’s the end of Homo sapiens and that we’ve outgrown our use. Bowie then lets us know it is time for Homo superior to take over. Who is Homo superior? That would be the fully awakened Human with all of their powers and abilities.
I thought about this song for a while then I remembered that Bowie’s fabulous 1999 come-back LP “Hours…” had a follow up song called “The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell”. I remember an interview back in 1999 when this was released. Bowie noted that it was not a return to 70s music, but a reflection on the 70s and where we are today.
What does Bowie think happened to the Pretty Things? Give a listen. Lyrics to follow.
“The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell”
Lyrics by David Bowie
What to do
What to say
What to wear on a sunny day
Who to phone
Who to fight
Who to dance with on a Sunday night
Reaching the very edge, you know
Reaching the very edge
Going to the other side this time
Reaching the very edge
[CHORUS]
You’re still breathing but you don’t know why
Life’s a bit and sometimes you die
You’re still breathing but you just can’t tell
Don’t hold your breath but the pretty things are going to hell
I am a drug
I am a dragon
I am the best jazz you’ve ever seen
I am a dragon
I am the sky
I am the blood at the corner of your eye
I found the secrets, I found gold
I find you out before you grow old
I find you out before you grow old
What is eternal
What is damned
What is clay and what is sand
Who to dis
Who to truss
Who to listen to
Who to suss
I’m reaching the very edge, you know
I’m reaching the very edge
I’m going to the other side this time
I’m reaching the very edge
[CHORUS]
I am a dragon
I am a drug
I am the best jazz you’ve ever heard
I am a dragon
I am the sky
I am the blood at the corner of your eye
I found the secrets, I found gold
I find you out before you grow old
I find you out before you grow old
[REPEAT (x4)]
The pretty things are going to hell
They wore it out but they wore it well
You’re still breathing but you don’t know why
You’re still breathing but you just can’t tell
Don’t hold your breath but the pretty things are going to hell
Taking that into consideration, the 90s were rough for Starseeds/Indigos/Crystals. Angst filled the airwaves. They were rebeling, there was war in the Middle East, the internet was being born, we were finally released from the Reagan Years. Grunge was getting popular, growling death-speed-metal was grinding skulls, mosh pits were getting bloody, kids were using more powerful drugs, like Ecstacy, synthetic drugs just to get away from this planet where they just don’t fit in. Those who didn’t find enough escape in the drugs, well those souls just decided to leave early. Teen suicide rates grew higher and higher in the 90s. Bowie is seeing the demise of the Indigos as they try to get away from it all. Had Bowie waited another 5 to 10 years, I think he may have changed the title to reflect that as in, “The Pretty Things Are Going Through Hell”.
Based on the positive vibes coming in this month, I do believe we are coming out through the “other side” slightly battered, but instead of angst and rebellion, we are finding love and compassion ruling our hearts.  You know that bouncing-off-the-walls energy Wendy spoke of in her last post? Yes, it has got a hold of me today as well. And I am LOVING it!  Enjoy the buzz of that energy and light that’s pouring in now my Pretty Things! Make good use of it please. Think about telling someone how much you love them today.
